Faith Works is a new ministry at Calvary. It began when we realized we could use our skills of knitting, crocheting and sewing to provide clothing for AIDS orphans in Zambia, Africa. We are working with Faith Lyena who is the founder and developer of this mission.

Faith is a nurse who cared for many victims of the HIV virus and who subsequently died from the disease. Faith was burdened for the children who were orphaned by the death of their parents. How would they survive on their own?

This ministry does not care for orphans in orphanages but rather empowers the villages where they live through the provision of clothing, teachers, school fees and horticultural training etc. They are cared for by adults in their village or by surviving relatives. We learned about one elderly grandma who is caring for 13 of her grandchildren. She is totally responsible for housing, feeding and clothing these children who range in age from babies to age 16.

Faith's goal is to create opportunities for these unfortunate children which will allow them to become self sufficient. They are attending school, leaning many skills including wood working (making furniture and other saleable items, also learning to build their own homes etc; agriculture (growing vegetables and fruits for their own consumption and to sell in the market place. An apiary has been set up and the honey harvested is sold at the market and used to feed families. Lemon and orange trees have been planted. A banana plantation provides food to fill many tummies. The children in this program go to school (if funds are provided) where they are taught to sew. Sixteen recent graduates from the school were each given a sewing machine, and are now able to use their sewing skills to sell their crafts. Education focuses on Bible studies in addition to providing a general education.

How can you help? There are several ways.girls_in_dresses

  1. Pray for the ministry
  2. Join our team as a sewer of simple A-line dresses
  3. Knit or crochet simple T - sweaters
  4. Sponsor the shipment of a box or boxes to Zambia(there are 2 shipments per year. It costs $40.00 for each box to be sent.
  5. Provide funds to purchase school uniforms for secondary school children.

Message from Zambia

We received an email from Doraine Ross co-ordinator of Faith's Orphans Fund Ministry who provide clothing and medicine to Faith Lyena the founder of the Ministry in Zambia.

We wanted to share this encouraging email with all of you who are so faithful in praying, sewing and knitting.

Would you please convey to your sewing and knitting ladies how much we appreciate their wonderful work.

Your clothing was outstanding. It was beautiful. The dresses and sweaters were gorgeous. The cargos shorts were wonderful.

Alice and John Ross take charge of my packing. They said, "The clothing and other items brought in from Calvary, Guelph are of the finest you could ever hope to receive."

That is a wonderful compliment , because Alice has seen lots of clothing go through.
May God bless you all as you work together for the orphans of Faith in Zambia.

The children would also want to say, "thank you".

With thanks,
Doraine Ross for Faith
