10 Reasons to Learn Greek

Here are 10 reasons to learn Greek. I threw them together and haven't spent a long time crafting them, but here they are nonetheless.
1. God, in his grace and wisdom, has chosen to reveal himself to us in space/time history. This means that he gave us his Word in specific times and places to specific people with specific languages. As we study Greek, we are able to pull back the veil, as it were, and grapple with the New Testament specifically, as God gave it.
2. Learning another language opens us up to cultures and worlds we knew nothing about.
3. Certain matters of language (verbal aspect and word order, among others) do not translate into English and therefore commentaries become very important to the English reader. Grappling directly with the Greek allows us to see some of these matters for ourselves.
4. You will be able to understand why translations can differ and adjudicate between alternate readings better.
5. Many of the best commentaries deal directly with the original languages of the Bible and so you would open up to yourself many great thinkers on the Scriptures who deserve to be heard.
6. Along with the last point, you will be able to access a wider breadth of Bible resources for your study.
7. Some of the richest times in the church (like the Puritan times) coincided with lay people learning the languages. And there are great stories of shoe makers, bankers, and shepherds learning Greek without a seminary education.
8. By lay people learning the languages, it keeps the leaders honest and accountable and ensures that an elite group of scholars aren’t the only ones who can “really say what the Scriptures mean.”
9. Learning Greek helps us understand grammar, including English grammar, better and our understanding of the Scriptures necessarily grows since the Bible is nothing less than grammar communicating meaning.
10. Endeavours that require effort and discipline are quite usually richly rewarded.
Perhaps an even better list of 7 reasons I read through after can be found here.
Keep in mind you can post comments below for discussion ;)
